Very scared help!? boyfriend in icu?

Okay so I recently asked this question but didn't really get a reply! My Fiance recently overdosed on xanax and in his sleep he threw up and aspirated it into his lungs and it gave him pneumonia and he layer like that all night until like 4am when I woke up and felt his chest to see if he was okay cuz when he went to bed that night, his heart was racing! And his heart was barely breathing and soaked in sweat and throw up!!! I flipped out and called 911 and well now he's in icu and at first he had high liver enzymes, kidney failure,not responsive at all, 0 respiration and they thought he had brain damage but now, 6 days later in icu...he's improved now somewhat ...his liver is getting better, his kidneys are a 100% better and functions great, he's very responsive and writing us perfect sentences, making motions for stuff but he can't talk cuz he's on the ventilator. They took him off the ventilator the other day for a few hours and he breathes on his own but because of the pneumonia on right lung and the newly developed staph infection, he is breathing too shallow and fast so they put him back on. I know I wrote alot but I am Sooooo scared im going to lose him. He's on a few different antibiotics but he keeps spiking fevers so im just wanting to hear some positive info about how he will get better! Is it common for someone that went through all of this to come out fine? He's young, only 28. Please no rude comments. Thanks so much

What's up with me and chewing?

So earlier today I was having lunch, i noticed that when i bite down really hard (i mean REALLY) the left side of my face; i think under my cheek bone on the hollow bit, i could feel pain there but i couldn't really figure out where exactly it was coming from. The pain wasn't excruciating but it was a sort of ache, i told my brother about it straight after feeling the pain, and he told me not to keep chewing hard on the left side- so i didn't and it went away after about 1 minute(not exaggerating). It makes me feel so out of touch with him sexually and makes me feel less conncted with him. My mother is ill. She has a sarcoma and was going through radiation. Two days ago she was rushed to the hospital and she is now on a ventilator and listed in critical condition. I was told that they thought it was pneumonia. If it wasn't for my dad, I would have been at the house helping her and would currently be at the hospital. My dad is a control freak. When mom first became ill I came home to help. My dad made it impossible to stay with them. He isolated me by not allowing me to leave once I got home. I couldn't go anywhere unless he drove me. He was abusive and put me down. Eventually, I got away. He threatened that if I didn't come back he would accuse me of stealing and have me arrested. I told him I wouldn't come back because of the way I was treated and that I didn't steal anything so I couldn't be arrested. Mom had a close call and my brother and I went out to get mom to the hospital. He took a swing at me and told me that mom's illness was my fault and that he would murder me if he thought he could get away with it. I left and have not been back. Now dad is trying to convince one of my teenage daughters to help him. I am petrified!! He is a loose cannon and I am scared. What should I do? I want to help my mom but since I won't help the way dad wants me to I can't even see my mom at the hospital!! I feel guilty but I am also afraid of what my dad is capable of! I have a preemie, my son was born at 29 weeks. Due to his poor lung function he had to be on a ventilator that caused some trauma to his airway. He checked out fine everywhere else but he has to have a tracheotomy for about another 8 months. Since he has a trach we receive nursing hours, about 40 hrs a week. At first I was very apprehensive about it and felt an invasion on my space in my home. Now I am more accepting and appreciate most of my nurses. However I still have those couple of nurses that make me feel uneasy about things I want to do as the parent or there are times that I just want to be left alone with my husband and baby. I am considering dismissing my nursing help and doing this on my own. I would guess that it was maybe a little bit of something that got in your eye. I think with allergies you would have more of an all- over redness/ pinkness and I would guess that you would get it every year. It's great that you took a contact break because that really will help your eye heal and prevent further injury from it rubbing on the eye. I would recommend using the eye drops that were prescribed, they might be a steroid or similar medicine that would help reduce the inflammation in your eye and give it a better chance to heal.

Help! 16 years old and having heartburn a lot!?

Bf loses sex drive after trauma?

sorry if this is tl;dr my fiance was in a traumatic accident and he lost his sex drive. he was in ICU for a month with a condom catheter, medicine of course, ventilator etc. he was in rehab and GI for two months. he currently is on a fluids while he sleeps with a central line. he has all of his strength back and other than the fact he's on fluids he lives a normal life. my question is: did he lose his sex drive because of the traumatic experience or is it just me or is he just not healthy enough? i know this all sounds retarded but having sex on my honeymoon or in general would be nice. i'd appreciate any answer that could help.

How to deal with a sick parent/ loved one?

I don't really know what to say. I'm 22, the oldest of 4 kids. My dad has been in hospital for about 7 weeks fighting an infection, on antibiotics. He was wallking, talking, breathing fine. Nobody really thought anything of it. But the night before last we received a call from the hospital to say he was critical and we had to go in straight away. We had to leave after visiting times and he apparantly became very agitated and they had to sedate him. The horror of them doing that to him (even though i know it was best), torments me because of how he felt beforehand..... Anyway, now he was rushed to a specialist hospital and he's having an emergency operation in the morning to replace a heart valve. I'm out of my mind with worry, i constantly feel sick, i can't sleep, i can't eat.... i'm thinking of the worst scenarios.... Can anyone please give me any help or guidence on how to deal with a situation like this.

How do i know what kind of an injury i have (ankle/foot)?

I rolled my left ankle today while having practice. The right side of my foot hurts quite a bt. sometimes while i put enough pressure on it or it is in the right position some of the ligaments hurt or my alkalies will hurt. I went through the exact same thing your having. Turns out having sharp pain is a good thing, if you feel an intense pressure that's when you have to worry. you might have accidently sprain a muscle. I couldn't turn my neck for 2 weeks. Try putting heat and ice on it. Switch between the two. And try moving your neck around.... even if it hurts. If it doesn't get better within the next 2 weeks you might have done some serious damage try going to the doctor and getting an xray. You should be okay though :) good luck and hope this helps!

Sis in law in coma for five days?

My sis in law went to hospital for low electrolytes. She was doing well. On the 4th day in hospital they had checked her vitals at 3 in the morning and she was up watching tv, communicating and doing quite well. At 4 a.m. she was unresponsive and is now 5 days into coma. The doc says that the medicine they had given her was all glucose based and when they did sugar test was over 1200 because of this but he does not admit that this is what caused the coma. Her MRI showed her brain was normal but she is completely unresponsive. She is on a ventilator and they are talking about putting in a trach. Her hands are balled into fists. They cannot or will not tell us what exactly is causing this or what the prognosis will be. Can anyone help?

Blind people can detect scent very well, better than sighted people. Quite possibly she smelled you and detected your shadow or silhouette. My father was sedated to insert a ventilator now his blood pressure is low , is this normal?

My father had a heart attack three days ago, his enzyme level are good minimal damage was done it appears. Now his doctor, feels his stomach is distended and did a CT Scan to see if there is a blockage, (he cannot hold down food and has no appetite). To do this they had to lay him flat. To lay him flat they had to insert a ventilator, to insert the ventilator they had to sedate him, the sedation has caused low blood pressure. Now they want to insert a Central (PICC) line to infuse the blood pressure medication. It appears everything they do causes another action to be required, He is 80 years old. Is all of this necessary, and considering what he has been through I am afraid his body cannot take all of these procedures, are they really necessary??

Is it safe to turn off the HRV through the breaker switch?

My heat recovery ventilator is constantly on and it doesn't have a setting on its remote panel that would allow me to idle it (should I feel that its operation is not needed). Anyway it is also located in the utility room and it would be inconvenient for me to pull its power cable out each time I'd want to turn it off temporarily. So my question is can I safely use the breaker switch (i.e. shut off the power to the connector that supplies the HRV) on my main electric fuse box to cut off power to the HRV when I don't want it to run? Is there any risk of damaging the HRV electronics/mechanics/components (or even my electric fusebox itself) over the long term by turning it on or off through the fusebox breaker switch two or three times per day on a regular basis?

I've been feeling baldy and lying in bed with fever for the last five days. The high temperatures only occur sporadically though, the rest of the time I just have this excruciating headache which I try to treat with ibuprofen, but the fever surges keep coming back. None of this is good enough. I've had two c-sections, first one was ok recovey, but the second I had adhesions (where they have stitched the muscles with the 'hole' in tummy), and this caused the sharp shooting pain in one side, similar to what you are saying. They also left some placenta in the uterus which was causing continued bleeding and pain. I'm not a doctor, and I can't be sure what problem you have, but I can say for sure that this is not normal, and not good enough. Go and see a different doctor to get fixed, and then speak to a lawyer to sue for negligence, because that is what this is. Good luck and godspeed.

Septic shock and pneumonia?

*** (Doctor Question) *** My mom came into ICU from a bad combo of medications Klonopin and some kind of muscle relaxer that dropped her breathing almost to nothing. She aspirated into her lungs in the er which gave her pneumonia. This is day 5. Day 3 they took her off ventilator and she was pretty restless, high heart rate, small and shorts breaths and complained of chest pains in which they did a ct scan and found some clots in her legs and one in lung. They put her on thinners injected into her abdomen (Something starting with a L)and placed a screen in a main vein in her abdomen to catch any clots that get loose. They placed her back on ventilator for a few days. This being day 5 they think she went into septic shock. They started her antibiotics on day 1 after the aspiration. They said her elevated white blood cell count did go down from yesterday. She has low blood pressure, increased heart rate and such. Her being 62 and the chain of events taking place....how does it look? What questions would be good to ask doctors to see if they are missing anything important?

It's always nice to hear from former patients, especially those who have recovered from a critical illness. A simple "thank you" should be enough. Doctors definitely do not expect any gifts or remarkable gestures (such as a tattoo, unless you really, REALLY like your doctor). Even if it's been awhile, he may still remember you.

I have always believed when you dream of a deceased loved one, they are coming to visit you and you shouldn't be scared of that in the dream itself and if you are then it is just your fears showing thru your dreams...nothing more. I think i have bowel or colon cancer because i have been having a really hard time going to the bathroom lately. I have been like this since nov, i started with constipation every now and then and then as the months went by it started hurting more and more to go to the restroom, i bleed bright red blood from my anus and i find it in my stool. The last 1 month have been the worst, i have had excruciating pain when i go to the restroom, i don't go to the restroom for approximately 4 to 5 days :/ which is horrible :( last friday i drank a magnesium citrate bottle and it helped me for the day, although my stool came out as diarrhea it still hurt and burned like hell!! on sunday i found a hemorrhoid and i have been putting preparation H. Since sunday i have been drinking Metamucil 2 times a day. since sat the only day i went to the restroom was on wednesday, only because i did an enema wash but even that didn't help, my stool didn't come out the way it was suppose too. I have lost a big amount of weight the past week and my appetite has dramatically reduced, my stomach always just feels uncomfortable, and is always hurting. This includes drinking lots of water and eating very healthy each day, especially eating a lot of fruits. :/ im really worried and i know i have to get it check out, but my parents don'tt always take it too seriously, it just worries me the most because im only 16 ;( so yeah i have tried everythingg from laxatives, to washes, stool softenersrs everyday, to fiber cereals and now the fiber drink but nothing is working, i really cant handel the pain anymore i cry every time. whats your guys opinion? please and thank you:)

Help? boyfriend in car accident...?

How to get rid or reduce major back pain?!?

I'm a cheerleader and this past season while doing some gymnastics i heard my back crack, a tingly feeling went through my spine and it knocked the wind out of me. I went to the doctor because they thought i fracture my L4 vertebrate but that turned out false. Ever since then my back has been in extreme pain whether i'm doing cheer or just walking. I've tried tons of pain killers, a heating pad, and a hot water bottle but nothing is working. My dad won't take me to the doctor because he said their isn't anything wrong with me. Since cheer has started up again the pain has been more than it ever has, its just getting worse and worse. i can't twist my back more than about 20 degrees to the side without excruciating pain. how can i get rid of this or at least reduce the pain? It's my lower back also.

In the medical field we use a phrase that goes "Time is muscle"...A heart attack is caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to an area of the heart muscle. The chance of survival depends on several things such as how long you wait to go to the hospital, and how much of the heart has been damaged. It is true that some people just drop dead from heart attacks, but that is not all that common. You have to have a SERIOUS blockage for that to happen. The fact that your boyfriend went all night before going to the ER was a mistake. Especially knowing that he has a heart condition. But what's done is done, and all he can do now is look at the options in front of him. I don't know what the doctor has discussed with you, but most times with severe heart attacks, and CABG is done (coronary artery bypass graft) in which they reroute the coronary arteries so the blood can flow around the blockage.He is also a high risk for heart surgery considering he has asthma. Being put under general anesthesia suppresses your natural drive to breathe, and when you come out of surgery the anesthesia is expelled through the lungs. For someone with a chronic lung condition like asthma, this can make it hard for them to be weaned off the ventilator. These are all things that need to be discussed with his doctor.

How would you feel if you were in my place?

I was friends with this girl. We used to share so much with each other and eventually we became roommates. Then I saw her true colors. She was so needy. Literally, there was nothing this girl could do by herself. My other roommates and I would have to wait on her all the time. From reaching things for her on the top shelf, to walking her to the laundry room. She would make me wait to do things on her schedule, make me hold her stuff when we were shopping and everything. She would cut you off to talk about herself and blatantly ignore you when you were talking to her. It became excruciating for all of us. But because I cannot say no to people, she took the most advantage of me. I eventually just got fed up and stopped doing things for her. I mean, I'm not obligated. I was her roommate, not her mom. When I stopped she started to distance herself from me, She wouldn't talk to me about anything personal anymore. She completely cut me out of her personal life. The only time she would ever talk to me is when she needed my class notes or help with her homework. I don't miss her or anything, at all. She was a pain in the ***, and I'm honestly better off without her. We don't even speak anymore. But at the same time, I can't help but feel hurt. To this day, she leaves me out of plans she makes with my friends and she treats me like I did something to harm her. She's been ignoring me and I feel like she doesn't have the right to be mad at me. The worst part is that she's still close with my friends and I'm afraid I'll have to face her in the future. Should I let my aunt go or see if there is still hope?

My aunt is mentally disabled and is 58 years old. She has pneumonia and been in the hospital for the past 20 days. Now from research pneumonia can take a while to get rid of. When I go see her she is aware and has responded to me. She just got of the ventilator like a week ago and they had to put her back on last night cause she has too much mucus in her right lung. So they are going to do a tracheotomy on her. they said this will allow her to be suctioned more easily and deeper in the lungs. My thing is when they look at her they see a feeble older woman. My aunt has always been small. The social worker at the hospital told me they can do the tracheotomy this Friday OR put her in hospice and let her go. I feel like that is a little harsh. Or is it just me. My aunt is not able to tell us her wishes so its up to my family. I was wondering if anyone had experience in this and just thoughts on what should be done. I just want her to get better so we can bring her home. I don't know what it is to have pneumonia so I don't know what I would want for myself. My aunt does not look in pain. She is just healing in my eyes. Tell me what you think.

In a sense you are wondering if you aren't slopping the hogs yourself, but aren't ready to return to your father like the son did because you still associate God with your father and aren't sure if he has things right either. My baby was born at 28 weeks and 1 day?

My baby was born 12 weeks premature and she was only 1 lb and 11.5 oz. I'd had pre-eclampsia, I'm guessing for a little while but the doctor just said it was my nerve. I finally got diagnosed when it got severe and I had to deliver. She was healthy, active and alert. She is about 10 days old now and they have her ventilator lowered from what it had been originally, she's being fed and she's almost 2lbs now. (2.5 ozs away). She's gaining a bit and breathing more on her own, active even in her sleep and she's got pretty quick reflexes. What I'm asking, is does it sound like she has a chance? The nurses keep saying she's doing good and great but yesterday she lost 1.5 ozs and as a precaution they had to raise her ventilator. Do any preemies go through ups and downs or just the ones who are too weak to live? I can't stop stressing out and it's scaring me so bad. I know people who were born worse off and who were born at the same time she was, but they never said they had ups and downs. I've done the classic walking into a lamp post on a busy high street whilst being distracted by something on the other side of the road. I've also had my dog pee on my leg whilst I was talking to someone on the street. wherever I have been sitting for an amout of time go to step off, I get this excruciating pain in my left groin area and in my glut. It ever happen if I stand still and move,or walking all of a sudden stab its there again! this has been going on like a long time now.

It means that someone cannot breathe on their own so a machine has to do it for them. I pray they heal quickly and can get off of it.

Of course they did. Anyone who knows you would have been scared stiff that you wouldn't make it. I remember a few months ago I wondered if anybody besides my family would even care if I died. Does induced coma mean critical condition?

My father in law has been in an induce coma for a week now and on life support after having a kidney transplant. He was already very sick before the surgery, Diabetes, high blood pressrue, hypertension, heart problems...and 2 years of dialysis that has made his heart even weaker. A few days ago they took him off the induced coma medication to see if he can wake up. They said he try to wake up but was having a heart problem so they had to induce him again. So now he is going on 2 weeks of life support and a ventilator. The kidney never did start working, it is showings some signs of functioning, but not much. My sister in law gave the kidney and she is also recovering, she seems to be in a lot of pain (she had it taken out he old fashion way) Anyhow this doesnt look good to me, all the doctors keep saying is "he will be fine" How is this fine? My father in law lives in india and is being treated in a neighboring city that has a big hospital. Their are night pads that are Super which I think would help you. Im not sure why you get hot and sweaty, I just think when your on your period and cramping, it just kinda makes us girls more miserable than need be. lol. I wish I could help you with the cramping, i get really bad cramps also, I take midol, but what I have heard of working is heating pads and taking a hot bath or shower.

If they have been higher than 88 I would definately be concerns. But if 88 has been about the average since returning home I wouldn't worry if I were you.

The outside of my left knee hurts only during running?

I was avid athlete, having competed in many triathlons, marathons, etc. My knee suddenly started hurting in middle of half marathon. It was a dull pain on the left side of my left knee. It quickly went from dull to sharp and i had to walk/limp the last 5 miles. I haven't been able to run since that day 4 years ago. One doctor told me I have arthritis (as shown on mri). Another doctor did exploratory surgery and said no arthritis and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Then acupuncturist told me my IT band was tight and not aligning correctly. he prescribed deep massage (which was excruciating, but I'll do anything to run again.) What next? I've tried orthotics, new shoes, a knee brace, a band around the top of knee. I take karate extensively and with zero knee pain. Running is my passion, it's my therapy. In my heart I feel like it's something mechanical that's wrong that can be fixed, but no one can tell me what it is. Any ideas? Like i said, mri shows very beginning of arthritis. Surgeron cleaned it and said it's fine. I can jog for about a mile before my knee hurts. It's impossible to run through this pain. If I walk for a minute it recovers quickly but as soon as I start to run, instant pain. It absolutlely only bothers me when I run. Unfortunately, that is what I want to do most. I can't stop crying over my baby brother, what should i do?

it can happen, and it's a scary thought. while i was in the icu i managed to pull my breathing tube out in my morphine stupor and i laid there suffocating for 2 or 3 minutes before a doc got me re-intubated and sedated. if no one heard my alarms going off i would have completely suffocated.

My 61 yr old father had a quadruple bypass and valve replacement in late December, and on Saturday he came in for an out patient procedure to remove the liquid in his lungs. However, they discovered he had a fever, so they admitted him and kept him for observation. On Sun they removed the liquid, and they gave him a transfusion due to being low and anemic on Mon 2/7. Within a few hours he went into some sort of shock. They rushed him into ICU and they performed CPR 2 times. They had difficulty stabilizing him, and they put him on full life support. His Dr said he probably wouldn't make it through the night but by some miracle and his will to survive he is still with us. He is completely off the heart pump but is still on the breathing machine (his breathing has significantly improved, so they plan to wean him off the ventilator). They discovered that the blood infection was due to an infection from his valve replacement surgery. He was diagnosed with Sepsis. Dr say he is fighting the infection, but is still in a comatose state. His nurse said his pulse was low but not stopped when they did CPR. The neurologist requested a CAT scan, and there were not signs of stroke or clots in his brain. However, he is still unconscious. He opens and closes his eyes and makes facial expressions as if he is in pain, bites down on breathing tube, and pupils are reactive, but does not obey commands. He also reacts to stimuli on his feet if tickled. In Nov when he had his heart attack they did not expect him to make it and just the same with his open heart. His will to survive has continued to prove everyone wrong. He is a fighter! My question to you: is it unreasonable to expect him to recover and come back to us? If so will he be normal? Thank you.

Ear cartilage piercing pain?

Slightly swollen gums?

I recently started having slightly painful gums on my bottom 4 teeth; they did bleed a lot with pressure and they look slightly bruised between some of the teeth, but I think they have always kinda looked like that. I can't remember,but I started brushing a little more frequently and they stopped bleeding so easily, but the pain is still there. I took midol and then got sick; should I take another dose?

I'm having excruciating cramps from my period. I took two midol pills and then a few minutes later I threw up. I had a scan done at 6 weeks to confirm my baby was in my uterus and not my tube. What should I do about my tooth?

I had a broken tooth that became infected. I went to the dentist, who suggested I get a root canal. I had the root canal done about three weeks ago by an endodontist, and afterward, my tooth started hurting even more. I can't put any pressure one it or I get a shooting pain that goes into my gum. I've been taking pain medicine just so I can eat and I've had a round of antibiotics before the root canal, and one after. It still hurts. I got an x-ray last Friday, but didn't get a clear answer. The endodontist said it was just inflammed and it would heal eventually and my dentist said I had resistant bacteria in there and gave me yet another round of antibiotics (3rd round), which isn't working so far. I'm getting frustrated. I'd love to be able to eat without excruciating pain.

How to deal with a sick parent/loved one?

I don't really know what to say. I'm 22, the oldest of 4 kids. My dad has been in hospital for about 7 weeks fighting an infection, on antibiotics. He was wallking, talking, breathing fine. Nobody really thought anything of it. But the night before last we received a call from the hospital to say he was critical and we had to go in straight away. Basically, we got there and thought he wouldn't make it through the night. Thankfully he did, and yesterday he was awake on a ventilator. It was the most difficult thing to see him struggling so much on it. Mouthing to us all that he loved us. Then when the nurse asked him if he was tired, he nodded and she said she may sedate him again. All of a sudden, he squeezed my hand, eyes wide open, shaking his head. He thought if he went to sleep he would never wake up again. That was the most horrible and horrific moment of my life. We had to leave after visiting times and he apparantly became very agitated and they had to sedate him. The horror of them doing that to him (even though i know it was best), torments me because of how he felt beforehand..... Anyway, now he was rushed to a specialist hospital and he's having an emergency operation in the morning to replace a heart valve. I'm out of my mind with worry, i constantly feel sick, i can't sleep, i can't eat.... i'm thinking of the worst scenarios.... Can anyone please give me any help or guidence on how to deal with a situation like this.

Does using the fan above the stove reduce heat in kitchen from the oven & save on AC cost in a small apartment?

My husband just came into the kitchen yelling at me because I was using the ventilator fan above the stove as I was roasting a turkey in the oven. He states that I am wasting electricity. I tried explaining to him that the heat from the oven rises and goes out with the fan and that helps save the AC costs because the heat doesn't go out into our small one bedroom apartment as much and therefore trigger the AC to come on more often. He says I am wrong. Who's right ?

Has anyone ever used adult diapers for their period?

I haven't used adult diapers, but I've used something else for my heavy periods. You know those things that they use on hospital beds? I think it's called a chuck or something like that. You can buy them at walmart. Anyway, on the nights when it's really heavy, I wear a tampon and use a pad with old underwear and a night shirt. Sometimes when I'd use the chuck in bed, it would get all messed up and move around and not do much good. So I started sleeping in the recliner, using a chuck. That way, the flow is going in 1 direction and it's turned out to be less messy, as far as leaks.

My dad went into intensive care with Pneumonia?

My dad went into ICU nearly 30 days ago with Pneumonia. He is 75, and is also on kidney dialysis. Each day he was doing slightly better but as he had been in for 2 weeks, they decided to a tracheostomy to try and ween him off the ventilator. A few days after the trac, he started doing quite well and was staying off the vent for 5-6 hours and then even 24 hours and was doing well for over a week. Nurses kept saying he will be on the ward soon and were really positive. Then nearly a week ago something happened and they told us he had a cardiac event and that his heart has been damaged by this and after a scan it shows the heart has expanded and not pumping blood as effciently. When we went to see him he is wide awake and can understand us as he will nodd yes or no and also move his hands and legs and the docs dunno why he is so wide awake but at the same time they said its very slim chance that he is gonna make it and if he has another deterioration then they are kinda telling us that they wont do anything else. We noticed blood coming out of his trach tube as its blood from his lungs and maybe back flow from the heart. Is a real shock to us as he was doing so well. They have done a chest drain and there is no more blood coming from trach tube, is this a good sign? Does anyone think there is any hope even though the docs say no? Even the nurses treat us differently and feels like they have given up on dad.Can all we pray for is a miracle? Is there anything else docs can try? Can he not live with some heart damage? We dont have the heart to say turn off his machine and he is still alive and understands us! Can the docs turn machines off without our authority? Isn't this unethical?

Coma with only brain stem working?

My girlfriend was found in a coma by her children. Found out she had an enlarged heart. She has been in a coma 14 days and drs. say there is no brain activity except for brain stem activity. What are the chances of any recovery. They are ready to do a trach on her since the ventilator is softening her esophagus.

My '88 300zx makes a kind of loud fan noise when I give it gas,the fan clutch was replaced but still noisy.?

On idle there is no noise, or at least not audible, but as I give it gas, I can hear a kind of loud fan or ventilator noise, I already replaced the fan clutch thinking it was bad, and it was fine for a few days but now the noise is back, any ideas?

Waking up after cardiac arrest? please answer!?

my uncle had to get surgery on his stomach for internal bleeding. after surgery he woke up and they took him off his breathing tube even though he still needed it. he went into cardiac arrest and they had to revive him. its been 4 days and he hasnt woke up. he has shown signs of movement and every once in a while he opens his eyes. he wakes up to cough and this happens pretty often. i noticed that when his daughter was talking to him that he started to open his eyes. the doctors said that they dont know if he will wake up. they said some people do and some people dont. do you know any ways that we can try to wake him up? he is on a ventilator and feeding tube. his heart rate and blood pressure are good. i just wanna wake him up. some doctors say that he should have woken up by now and some say that they put so much sleeping medicine in him that it takes 3-4 days to wear off and we are on day 4. how can we try to wake him up? we have been going everyday he has been there and staying all day. we talk to him and we dont leave him alone. could this be helping in letting him know that he is loved and that he is wanted here so he will try harder to wake up?

Dr.s refuse to perform surgery, ot based on cost but life expenctancy outcome.?

My father has cancer and ontop of that has a perforated esophageus (sp?). THis perforation is making him dye much more quickly then he would otherwise. THe Dr.s are refusing to do the surgery because they arent even sure that his body is able to recover enough to survive. Or that he can even make it past the anestethia. Are they allowed to refuse just because he is a terminal patient? The insurance is going to pay for it that isn't the issue. My dad has indicated that he wants anything done that can possibly prolong his life (he is currently awake on a ventilator but able to communicate).

What is causing this extremely sore throat?

A couple of months ago, I got the worst sore throat of my life. It was excruciating. It felt as if the skin in my throat was being ripped apart. It was way in the back too, more like the inside of my neck. I couldn't even move because that would cause me to cough, which would set my throat on fire. I had a fever as well. This lasted for about a week, and then I got better. Since then, I've had 'flashes' I guess you'd call it. They're like much more mild versions of it. I can't figure out what's wrong though. I went to the doctor, and all he said was that it wasn't strep. I was briefly worried that I could have throat cancer, but since I'm a teen, that's pretty unlikely.

Is the ankle muscle almost/fully recovered?

Yea like did something to the muscles around the fibula bone around 6-7 weeks ago and so I couldn't run. But I tried running today and I ran 2 laps and walking a lap on a 200m track for a grand running total of 1 mile. Then I went to go swimming for about 25 laps and went to the jacuzzi for about 10 min. I don't know if the muscle/tendon/ligament thing is still injured or nearly/fully recovered because I burned the skin above the injured part and it was a teensy weensy bit more painful, but not like excruciating, more like a playful punch to the shoulder feel to it. But now it's like the same as it was before I worked out. Does this mean that the skin was hurting and not so much the muscle thing?? I hope for good news, but I can accept bad news. I just want to start running as soon as possible. Also, would it be wise to go running on Tuesday? Oh I also wore an elastic ankle brace while running and will be wearing the same ankle brace while running on tuesday.

What sort of illness do I have?

It started with a light cough two days ago then last night i felt really bad i was really cold I had an excruciating headache and felt dizzy and just kept on flinching uncontrollably and when i was sleeping i woke up at 3:17 and felt really hot. When I woke up this morning I had the same symptoms only with a blocked nose and kept on coughing up phlegm. Right now i feel fine only with a mild headache and my throat is a little sore. My symptoms just keep rapidly changing like last night i was ok then half an hour hour later i felt like crap. And two hours ago when i woke up i wanted to kill myself now im fine. It may just be a generic cold but im not totally sure if it is.

My dad died on September 14th. How do I deal with the sadness?

He died the day before my birthday. I am the oldest daughter and have been responsible for everything. No one hads helped me. I actually watched his body shut down over a 2 day period where fluid was building up in his body and he was dying. I was the only one there in the hospital.I wake up at 3 or 4am in the morning some days and just start thinking about him. I do not know how to get the last 2 days out of my head. He didnt even look like my dad anymore. His body was so swollen and he was in end stage heart failure. I held his hand through it all every time the hospital had visits. The night before he died, I knew it was soon because ICU let me stay 4 hours past visiting. I went home that night and got a call in the morning saying he had another cardiac arrest and they put him on a ventilator which they were not supposed to do because I gave them the living will and I had Power of Attorney. I went in to the hospital thinking I was going to have to remove my dad from ventilator and wasnt sure if I could. The nurses brought me in to see him. I went in and saw him on that tube and breathing machine. Thinking he was still alive because I saw his stomach going up and down, I kissed him on the head and held his hand, 1 minute later, the stupid nurse told me he died 7 mins ago.. I had no idea he wasnt alive, then when I looked at him I saw how his face was turned. I fell to the ground and started screaming. They had to put me in a wheel chair because I couldnt get up. I hate that the nurses did that to me. I dont know how to get over any of this any more. How long will this take? I cry where it feels like I wont stop some times. I could be doing well for few weeks and then all of the sudden I get really upset again. I miss him so much. I took care of him the last 3 years because of his short term memory loss from previous strokes and my step mother divorced him and I stepped up because he did need some help with small things. How do I get through this. My own blood related sister wasnt even there while he was dying because she was on drugs. My ex step mom gave me difficulty in letting my half brother and half sister come in and say good bye just in case it was really the end. I deal with his death on a daily basis because I am the Executor of estate. I am so tired of all this and need help. Please help me

Is this reaction inhumane?

Maybe I am a bit inhuman myself but I think in a situation like that, that I would be relieved too. I understand where your coming from in the sense that all they have done is hurt your family and its not a surprise that, that anger is till there. The only thing I can say is try to forgive him and let go of your anger because in the end its only hurting you. You sound like a good person who just wants to protect your family. Unfortunately these other family members don't care about your anger and having it is just wasting your energy. You don't have to feel bad about your cousin and you don't have to forgive him but letting go of your anger is necessary for you to heal and move on.

Jaw pain a month after wisdom teeth removal?

it has only been 4 weeks. sometimes the jaw is sore for a while longer because it is opened so far to get the extraction done. give it more time, another 2 to 3 wks.

Left lower abdominal pain?

For the past like 3 days or something i have been getting this pain in my left lower abdominal. sometimes its sharp and excruciating, sometimes i feel like im sick and im going to throw up, but on like a scale of 1-10, 10 being the worst, i would give it around a 5-7. its not unbearable pain, but it hurts like hell, but i can deal with it. but i dont know why this is happening? im only 13 btw. can someone help me please? and its not caused from working out or anything like that...
